Toyota & Lexus Transmission Service & Repair

Protecting One of Your
Vehicle's Most Vital Systems

The transmission is one of the most complex and expensive systems in your vehicle — and one of the most overlooked when it comes to routine maintenance. At Ken's Quality Auto Repair, we've been servicing Toyota and Lexus transmissions for over 35 years, and we know just how important early attention and proper maintenance are to keeping these systems running smoothly for the long haul.

Whether you need a routine fluid service, are experiencing shifting problems, or have been told you may need a transmission repair, we'll give you an honest assessment and a clear plan of action.

Toyota & Lexus Transmission Services We Provide

  • Transmission fluid inspection and replacement

  • Transmission fluid flush (pan drop or full exchange)

  • Transmission filter service

  • Transmission diagnostic scan and testing

  • Shift quality diagnosis (hard shifting, slipping, delayed engagement)

  • Torque converter service and diagnosis

  • Valve body diagnosis and repair

  • CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) service and repair

  • Automatic transmission repair and rebuild assessment

  • Transmission cooler line inspection and service

  • Transfer case service (4WD and AWD models)

Automatic, CVT, and Manual: What Toyota and Lexus Uses

Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) point to a system or circuit that's reporting an issue — they don't always tell you exactly which part has failed. A P0420 code, for example, is commonly associated with a catalytic converter issue, but it can also be triggered by exhaust leaks, faulty oxygen sensors, or an engine running too rich. Replacing the most expensive part first without proper diagnosis is a costly mistake.

Toyota and Lexus vehicles are also among the most electronically sophisticated on the road. Their systems — including hybrid powertrains, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and advanced traction management — require diagnosis tools and expertise specific to these platforms. Generic code readers used at auto parts stores can retrieve basic fault codes, but they don't access the full depth of Toyota and Lexus system data.

Automatic, CVT, and Manual: What Toyota and Lexus Uses

Toyota and Lexus use several different transmission types depending on the model and year:

Automatic Transmissions are found across the majority of Toyota and Lexus models — from Camry and Tacoma to the GX and LS. These use a torque converter and planetary gear set and respond well to regular fluid changes as their primary maintenance need.

CVT Transmissions (Continuously Variable Transmission) are used in a growing number of Toyota models including the Corolla, C-HR, and Corolla Cross. CVTs use a belt-and-pulley system instead of fixed gears and require CVT-specific fluid — using the wrong fluid type can cause premature wear or damage.

Hybrid Transaxles found in the Prius, RAV4 Hybrid, Highlander Hybrid, and Lexus hybrid models use a unique Power Split Device that blends input from the gas engine and electric motors. These don't have a traditional transmission in the conventional sense, but they still require fluid service and specialized diagnostic knowledge.

We have the training and equipment to service all of these systems properly.

Why Transmission Maintenance Gets Skipped — and Why That's a Problem

Transmission fluid doesn't get the same attention as engine oil, partly because the service interval is longer and partly because many vehicles no longer have a transmission dipstick for easy checking. Toyota's "lifetime" fluid designation on some models leads many owners to assume the transmission never needs service — but that designation refers to the life of the fluid under ideal conditions, not a real-world recommendation.

Over time, transmission fluid breaks down, loses its lubricating and heat-transfer properties, and accumulates fine metal particles from normal wear. Running degraded fluid accelerates wear on internal components and can contribute to the kind of damage that turns a $200 service into a $3,000 repair.

A simple fluid change at appropriate intervals is the most cost-effective transmission maintenance you can do.

Warning Signs Your Transmission May Need Service or Repair

  • Delayed engagement when shifting from Park into Drive or Reverse

  • Rough, jerky, or hard shifting between gears

  • Slipping — the engine revs but the vehicle doesn't accelerate normally

  • Shuddering or vibration at certain speeds (especially common with CVTs)

  • Transmission warning light or check engine light illuminated

  • Unusual noises (whining, clunking, humming) during acceleration or shifting

  • Transmission fluid that is dark, burnt-smelling, or visibly dirty

  • Vehicle slow to respond or behaving erratically in stop-and-go traffic

If you're noticing any of these signs, the earlier you bring it in, the better the outcome is likely to be.

Why Bring Your Toyota or Lexus to Ken's for Transmission Service?

Transmission work requires both the right tools and deep familiarity with the specific systems in your vehicle. Our 35-plus years of exclusive Toyota and Lexus experience means we've worked on virtually every transmission configuration these manufacturers have produced. We understand the differences between model years, the known problem areas on specific platforms, and the right approach for each situation.

We'll start with a thorough diagnosis, explain exactly what we find, and give you honest options — not a one-size-fits-all recommendation.

Transmission concerns shouldn't wait.
