Toyota & Lexus Power Steering Service

Effortless Steering, Properly Maintained

Power steering is one of those systems you don't think about until something goes wrong — a stiff wheel, a whining noise when you turn, or a fluid leak under the car. At that point, it's usually been an issue for a while. Like most things on a well-maintained Toyota or Lexus, the power steering system responds well to proper care and deteriorates faster when that care is skipped.

Ken's Quality Auto Repair services and repairs both hydraulic and electric power steering systems on all Toyota and Lexus models, with the specific knowledge these systems require.

Toyota & Lexus Power Steering Services We Provide

  • Power steering fluid inspection and flush

  • Power steering pump diagnosis and replacement

  • Steering rack and pinion inspection and repair

  • Power steering hose and line replacement

  • Steering fluid leak diagnosis and repair

  • Electronic Power Steering (EPS) diagnosis and calibration

  • Steering angle sensor reset (required after alignment and certain repairs)

  • Steering column and intermediate shaft inspection

  • Power steering system noise diagnosis (whining, groaning, clunking)

Hydraulic vs. Electric Power Steering: What Toyota and Lexus Uses

Toyota and Lexus have been transitioning from traditional hydraulic power steering to Electric Power Steering (EPS) across their lineup for over a decade, so your vehicle may have either system depending on its model and year.

Hydraulic Power Steering (HPS) uses a belt-driven pump to pressurize power steering fluid, which assists the steering rack when you turn the wheel. The fluid in this system degrades over time, absorbing moisture and losing its lubricating and protective properties. Regular fluid changes — typically every 30,000 to 50,000 miles depending on the vehicle — help protect the pump and rack from premature wear. Neglected hydraulic systems often develop pump noise, stiffness, and eventually leaks.

Electric Power Steering (EPS) eliminates the hydraulic pump entirely, using an electric motor mounted on the steering column or rack to provide steering assistance. EPS requires no fluid service, which simplifies maintenance — but it introduces its own diagnostic considerations. EPS systems can develop issues with the torque sensor, the power steering ECU, or the motor itself, often presenting as a power steering warning light, steering that feels heavy, or inconsistent assist. These faults require specialized diagnostic tools to isolate.

Toyota's more recent models — including newer Camry, Corolla, Highlander, and most current Lexus models — use EPS. Older models, and some body-on-frame platforms like the Tacoma, Tundra, and 4Runner, retained hydraulic systems for longer due to the higher steering loads involved.

Warning Signs Your Power Steering Needs Attention

  • Stiff or heavy steering, especially at low speeds or when parking

  • Whining, groaning, or squealing noise when turning the wheel

  • Steering feels inconsistent — sometimes normal, sometimes heavy

  • Power steering warning light illuminated

  • Visible fluid leak (usually underneath the front of the vehicle, oily or reddish fluid)

  • Steering wheel vibrating or shuddering during turns

  • Noticeably more effort required to turn the wheel than usual

  • Burning smell from the engine compartment (can indicate a slipping power steering belt or overheating fluid)

Hydraulic power steering issues tend to develop gradually. Electric power steering issues can appear more suddenly. Either way, they're worth addressing promptly — steering problems affect your ability to control the vehicle safely.

Why Bring Your Toyota or Lexus to Ken's for Power Steering Service?

Power steering diagnosis and repair is an area where knowing the specific vehicle platform makes a significant difference. We know which Toyota and Lexus hydraulic systems are prone to pump noise at higher mileage, which EPS systems have known software calibration issues, and how to properly flush and refill hydraulic systems with the correct fluid specification — because using the wrong fluid type can damage seals and cause leaks.

With over 35 years of exclusive Toyota and Lexus experience, we bring the right knowledge to every power steering service.
