The catalytic converter is responsible for converting harmful combustion byproducts (hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides) into less harmful compounds before they exit the tailpipe. Oxygen sensors and air/fuel ratio sensors monitor the exhaust stream and feed real-time data back to the engine management computer, which uses that data to adjust the fuel mixture for optimal combustion.
