Toyota & Lexus Exhaust & Smog System Service

Quiet, Clean, and Compliant

Your exhaust system does more than muffle engine noise — it manages emissions, protects the cabin from harmful gases, and plays a direct role in engine performance and fuel economy. When any part of the system fails, the effects range from an annoying rattling sound to a failed smog inspection to a genuine safety concern.

At Ken's Quality Auto Repair, we diagnose and repair the full exhaust and emissions system on all Toyota and Lexus models, keeping your vehicle running cleanly and meeting California's emissions requirements.

Toyota & Lexus Exhaust & Smog Services We Provide

  • Exhaust leak diagnosis and repair

  • Catalytic converter inspection and replacement

  • Oxygen (O2) sensor testing and replacement

Why the Exhaust System Matters Beyond Just Noise

Most people think of the exhaust system primarily as a noise-reduction component — and while that's part of its job, it's far from the whole story.

The catalytic converter is responsible for converting harmful combustion byproducts (hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides) into less harmful compounds before they exit the tailpipe. A failing catalytic converter doesn't just cause a check engine light — it increases emissions, hurts fuel economy, and can eventually cause damage to other exhaust components from excessive heat.

Oxygen sensors and air/fuel ratio sensors monitor the exhaust stream and feed real-time data back to the engine management computer, which uses that data to adjust the fuel mixture for optimal combustion. When these sensors fail or read inaccurately, the engine can run rich (too much fuel) or lean (too little), affecting performance and fuel efficiency.

Exhaust leaks — cracks or failed gaskets anywhere between the engine and the tailpipe — allow exhaust gases to escape before they've been fully processed. Beyond the noise they create, upstream leaks can feed incorrect data to the oxygen sensors, cause the engine to run poorly, and in some locations, allow carbon monoxide to enter the cabin.

Catalytic Converter Theft: A Reality for Toyota and Lexus Owners

Catalytic converter theft has become a significant problem for Toyota and Lexus owners, particularly for Prius and other hybrid models. Hybrid catalytic converters contain higher concentrations of precious metals (platinum, palladium, rhodium) because they process exhaust at lower temperatures — making them a high-value target for thieves.

If your catalytic converter has been stolen, we can help with replacement. We use quality OEM-equivalent converters that meet California CARB compliance requirements — which is essential in California, where aftermarket converter regulations are stricter than federal standards.

Warning Signs Your Exhaust System Needs Attention

  • Louder-than-normal exhaust note, rattling, or ticking sounds (especially on cold start)

  • Sulfur or rotten egg smell from the exhaust (often a failing catalytic converter)

  • Check engine light with codes related to catalytic converter efficiency or oxygen sensor performance

  • Reduced fuel economy

  • Failed smog inspection

  • Visible rust, holes, or damage on exhaust components

  • Exhaust smell inside the cabin (pull over and have it inspected — do not continue driving)

California Exhaust & Emissions Compliance

California has stricter emissions requirements than most other states, and aftermarket exhaust components — including catalytic converters — must carry a CARB (California Air Resources Board) Executive Order (EO) number to be street-legal. This applies to replacement catalytic converters as well as performance exhaust modifications.

We use California-compliant parts on every exhaust repair we perform, so you won't have a compliance problem at your next smog check

Why Bring Your Toyota or Lexus to Ken's for Exhaust Work?

Exhaust and emissions diagnostics on Toyota and Lexus vehicles require more than just a visual inspection. The emissions system is deeply integrated with the engine management system — a P0420 code (catalyst efficiency below threshold) can have a dozen different root causes, and addressing the right one requires proper diagnosis. We've been sorting these systems on Toyota and Lexus vehicles exclusively for over 35 years.

We'll find the actual problem, fix it correctly, and make sure your vehicle is ready for California's smog inspection requirements.
